  • Publicly-owned generator Stanwell is proposing to secure a 15-year deal with Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners to purchase 100 per cent of stored energy from Stage 3 of its proposed Supernode Battery Energy Storage Project in Brendale.

  • The proposed capacity purchase agreement would increase Stanwell’s energy storage portfolio by 1,010 MWh of firmed energy bringing the total of firmed energy to 2.8 GWh committed by 2027.

  • The proposed agreement also includes obligations to facilitate discussions regarding the potential involvement of Stanwell's Asset Maintenance Company (SAMCo) to provide operations and maintenance services for the project, potentially creating work for up to 10 employees.

  • The proposed deal would be Stanwell’s first battery power deal in partnership with a private company. Stanwell is already building two mega batteries at the Tarong and Stanwell Power Station sites which are set to become Clean Energy Hubs.

Stanwell continues to make strides in their mission to bolster their firmed energy capacity, with an upcoming deal to secure 100 per cent capacity from Stage 3 of Quinbrook’s Supernode Battery Energy Storage System.

The proposed agreement would add 1,010 MWh to Stanwell’s energy storage portfolio.

The proposed 15-year deal complements the 1800 MWh of energy storage Stanwell will have available from its two battery energy storage systems, both currently under construction and targeting commissioning by 2027.

Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners is developing the Supernode BESS facility strategically located next to the central node of the Queensland transmission network, the South Pine substation in Brendale just north of Brisbane. The project is part of a $2.5 billion ‘green data’ centre powered by renewables and battery storage on a 30-hectare site.

The Supernode BESS is being developed in stages with a total capacity of 750 MW. Stanwell is proposing to secure 100 per cent capacity (250 MW / 1010MWh) from Stage 3. Construction of Stages 1 and 2 are already underway.

The Stage 3 project is proposed to generate up to 60 jobs during construction and up to 10 ongoing jobs once operational.

The proposed agreement also provides obligations to facilitate discussions regarding Stanwell’s Asset Maintenance Company (SAMCo) providing operations and maintenance services for the project.

The parties are in the process of finalising commercial arrangements

Quotes attributable to Michael O’Rourke, CEO Stanwell:

“This proposed agreement would be a win for Stanwell and its commercial and industrial customers looking to decarbonise their operations.

“It is another milestone announcement in our renewable transformation and would assist in delivering on the Queensland Government’s renewable energy targets of 70% by 2032 and 80% by 2035.

“The proposed arrangements would enable Stanwell to have 2.8 GWh of renewable energy storage committed by 2027, which means we are well on our way to achieving our objective of 5 GWh of firming assets by 2035.

“Battery storage is crucial, allowing for renewable electricity to be stored and then released during peak demand periods. The proposed Stage 3 of Supernode would do just that whilst also creating further employment opportunities from the overall site expansion.”
