  • A 60 metre ‘super-load’ has delivered a new multi-million-dollar power transformer to Stanwell Power Station, ensuring reliability of energy supply.

  • The 168-tonne mega package was transported over two and a half thousand kilometres across three states before arrived at Stanwell Power Station yesterday.

  • As part of a $10 million project, a state-of-the-art transformer will play a key backup role to maintain stability of the grid.

A multi-million-dollar critical spare transformer has been delivered to Stanwell Power Station in a massive logistical feat that took two years of planning and engineering, and a two and a half week journey across three states.

The 60-metre ‘super load’ carrying the 168-tonne Generator Step Up transformer arrived at Stanwell Power Station on Tuesday, after travelling over two and a half thousand kilometres from Wilson Transformer Company in Melbourne.

Transformers play a key role in Queensland’s ongoing energy security, converting the generator output voltage from 20kV to 275kV so the energy can be connected to the grid.

This state-of-the-art transformer will enhance reliability of energy supply to the National Electricity Market and customers by acting as a critical backup should something unexpected occur with an existing generator transformer.

It will also enhance the operational flexibility of the Stanwell Power Station enabling Stanwell to better respond to fluctuations in energy demand as well as support the transition towards a more sustainable energy future.
