Empowering the future: New ‘Bright Sparks’ begin at Stanwell
Six new apprentices and one trainee start at Stanwell Power Station (SPS)
The Apprenticeship and Trainee program provides hands-on experience while completing qualifications through TAFE
The program is an important employment pathway for local students looking to start a career in the energy industry
Stanwell has welcomed six new local apprentices and one trainee to Stanwell Power Station as part of Stanwell’s annual Apprenticeship and Trainee Program.
The new apprentice recruits will get hands-on training as Mechanical Fitters and Electricians while the trainee will get experience in Business Services.
The program is designed to give jobseekers the skills and hands on experience needed for a successful career in the energy industry while gaining their qualifications through TAFE.
Mechanical Fitter and Turner apprentices will rotate each year through six different maintenance teams, and the Electrical Instrumentation apprentices will rotate through the Electrical and Instrumentation teams during their five years.
Stanwell General Manager Central Generation Angie Zahra said skilled tradespeople play a crucial role in the successful day-to-day running of our operations.
“Throughout the program, apprentices will be exposed to a wide range of real-world scenarios, developing new skills and being mentored by our valued and experienced team members,” Ms Zahra said.
“We’re really proud of our Apprenticeship and Trainee program, which is one of our key career pathways, and produces highly skilled tradespeople, some of who continue to be valuable members of the corporation.
“The program has been running for several years and in that time, we’ve had 93 Apprentices and Trainees come through Stanwell Power Station’s doors.”
Local resident, Baylin Janes recently completed his five-year Electrical Instrumentation apprenticeship at Stanwell Power Station and is now continuing his career as a qualified Electrician with the corporation.
For Baylin, staying in his hometown and being able to return home each night were important factors in his career decision, and one that Stanwell is proud to facilitate. Enabling our people to stay and work in regional areas is paramount to contributing to local economic and social growth.
“Over the past five years, I’ve been fortunate to receive invaluable mentoring from tradespeople and technicians across various departments, all eager to share their knowledge. The work itself is always changing, which keeps me challenged and encourages me to think in new ways,” he said.
“If you’re considering an apprenticeship with Stanwell, I highly recommend it. It’s a great work environment, and the development opportunities are endless.”
Applications for the 2026 intake will be opening later this year.
