  • A $53 million planned overhaul of Unit Two at Tarong Power Station is underway

  • The scheduled work will create a significant boost of around 500 specialised contractor jobs over the next three months.

  • It will inject around $10 million into the local economy

Stanwell is delivering a $53 million planned maintenance program at Tarong Power Station until the end of November, which is creating hundreds of contractor jobs and set to bring millions of dollars in stimulus to the local economy.

Around 500 extra workers are needed for the overhaul of Unit Two which will require more than 190,000 direct hours of work from specialised trades, services and maintenance staff along with 70,000 indirect hours for support services such as trades assistants, cleaners, engineers and supervisors.

It will also deliver significant flow-on economic activity to the South Burnett region, injecting around $10 million locally – supporting local businesses supplying materials and equipment, accommodation, transport and hospitality services.

The planned maintenance program ensures the power station continues to generate secure, reliable electricity for Queensland customers.

Quotes attributable to Stanwell General Manager Southern Generation Mick Joy:

“We know from previous power station overhauls what an incredible boost they are for the local economy and these planned works over the next few months on Unit Two at Tarong Power Station will be no different.

“For the next few months, around 500 extra contractors on top our permanent workers will be in the South Burnett region, working at the power station, staying in local accommodation, hiring vehicles and eating at cafes and restaurants, providing an injection of around $10 million into the local economy.

“The planned overhaul at Tarong Power Station forms part of Stanwell’s maintenance program to ensure it can continue to meet our customers and the National Electricity Market’s energy demands.

“Our assets are required to have regular maintenance, to ensure they are kept in good condition and continue to deliver electricity reliably and safely.

“As Queensland continues to advance its transformation to renewables, our existing assets and workforce have an important role to play in providing secure, reliable and affordable energy – that’s why we are continuing to invest in Tarong Power Station, our people and local communities,” he said.
