CQ-H2: CENTRAL QUEENSLAND HYDROGEN PROJECT

ICON H2 REVERSED

Overview

The Central Queensland Hydrogen Project (CQ-H2) is a global collaboration involving domestic and international partners from across the hydrogen supply chain who have come together to develop a global-scale renewable hydrogen project near Gladstone in Central Queensland.

This project is being developed on the land of the Gurang, the Gooreng Gooreng, and the Taribelang Bunda peoples and we acknowledge and respect their Elders, past present and emerging.

The project will involve development of:

  • A hydrogen production facility at Aldoga, near Gladstone

  • A hydrogen gas pipeline to transport hydrogen to Gladstone Port

  • A hydrogen liquefaction facility and ship loading facilities at Gladstone Port

  • An ammonia production facility at Gladstone Port.

CQ-H2 will act as the catalyst for Australia’s renewable superpower future by facilitating the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate, value-adding, trade-exposed industries, anchoring the economic transition in Central Queensland, with the creation of new long-term jobs and prosperity, and creating a new export industry whilst supporting the decarbonisation objectives of key regional trading partners.

Technical Details

Partners: The CQ-H2 consortium comprises Japanese foundation companies Iwatani Corporation and Marubeni Corporation, Singapore’s Keppel, and Australia’s Stanwell Corporation Limited.

Australian chemicals manufacturer Incitec Pivot Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding in September 2024 with the intent to join the CQ-H2 consortium in support of renewable ammonia development.

Funding: The Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) stage of the project is a AU$117 million investment funded by from government and consortium partners. This includes $20 million from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), and $15 million from the Queensland Government’s Queensland Renewable Energy and Hydrogen Jobs Fund.

End users: The renewable hydrogen will be exported via its different carriers to Japan and Singapore, as well as supplying large industrial customers in Central Queensland.

Energy: Stanwell will supply the project with renewable energy. For the initial phase this will be via a power purchase agreement with Acciona Energia for the Aldoga Solar Farm, located next door to the proposed Hydrogen Production Facility.

Capacity: In the initial phase the installed electrolyser size will be 720 MW, supporting average hydrogen production of 200 tonnes per day. At ultimate scale, the planned capacity is 2880 MW, supporting production of 2,880 tonnes per day of hydrogen.
